North of Mexico City, a series of explosions shook the city. The Governor of the state of Mexico announced that up to twenty-nine people died and seventy-two were injured. Three of the injured victims were minors. They were sent to receive immediate care for their severe burn wounds. As soon as the explosion broke out, emergency personnel were sent in. The victims included employees of a fireworks plant and the people that gathered at the nearby San Pablito market. The area is well known for firework production and sales. Witnesses reported feeling the explosion up to 40 miles away, and described the incident as a catastrophic fireworks show. The images and pictures of the incident show huge plumes of smoke blowing into the sky.
The area where the explosion took place is densely populated. Most of the people that lived or knew people in the area were deeply worried that they might have lost someone close to them. One of the people affected by the explosion was looking for her niece’s missing boyfriend and described the process: “They haven’t been able to identify him because he didn’t have his ID.
